hand-colored infrared cityscapes

Made in some of the places I love, such as New York City and San Francisco, these images represent the cities as I discover them while strolling with a camera. My photographs span a range of urban subject matter, including quirky architectural details and scenic views, quaint but surreal landscapes, bits of imagery reflected in shop windows, and found objects unique and enchanting. Traveling to these popular locales, my cityscapes transcend picture postcard renditions of clichéd "must see" views, and instead detail the intriguing singularities that give each city its individual appeal.

The alchemy of traditional photographic methods has always entranced me, and it's perhaps nowhere more apparent than in the rendition of objects on black and white infrared film. This film requires special handling, and it renders a quality of light that's impossible to see any other way, making highlights luminescent and greenery glowing.

Each image begins as a carefully crafted black and white infrared photograph. It is archivally printed and mounted, and transparent oil tints are applied directly to the surface of the print. The hand application of vivid, fanciful oil color to each print's surface makes each image one-of-a-kind. Print editions run no more than twenty-five printed photographs in sizes from 5x7 to 11x14.

The dreamy, timeless images in this body of work are featured in private, corporate, and public collections and have garnered awards in juried arts festivals. Original hand-colored prints of these and other images are available for purchase for display, or licensing for reproduction, and images made in this style can be commissioned.
